The Bedfordshire School of Photography was started in 2013 after finding that many keen photographers were unable to find suitable part-time evening courses in the Bedfordshire area.

The courses that were available were mainly full-time day courses such as A Level, BTEC, HNC and HND aimed at mainly 16-21 year olds. Many colleges and other institutes have evening courses many of these are too structured for keen amateurs.

I found the majority of students enrolling on say a City & Guilds or NCFE Level 1 course were those who simply wanted to take better photos and get a better understanding of their cameras. There were also those who were looking for a career change whilst the remainder consisted of those who were already studying another course and thought a Photography qualification would be beneficial.

What I did find interesting was the drop out rate after the first week seemed to be getting higher and this was down to the amount of written work students were expected to be doing which surprised most of them. Most were there just to learn how to take better photos and not to meet deadlines by having to produce workbooks and essays.

So in 2013 I decided to start a series of courses that was aimed at the needs of students who wanted to learn how to take better photos and get a better understanding of their cameras without the need to write essays or undertake endless amounts of research. I wanted to make photography fun and enjoyable for students but in a structured way.

Students are expected to attend one evening a week and given practical tasks most evenings where they are actually using their cameras. Topics such as Depth of Field, Shutter Speed, ISO, Manual, Focus and lighting are covered to a basic practical level where students can actually see the results of what they are learning.

We cover Photoshop basics but the emphasis is on using cameras correctly and not relying on editing software, in other words getting it right at camera stage.

The students are also given a series of short projects to work on that incorporate elements of projects from City and Guilds, NCFE and A Level. This is all to ensure students are learning in a structred manner.
