Until recent years it used to be possible to place a new website at the top of Google searches by simply following a set of clever tips and tricks. Sadly Google and other search engines now regularly change their algorithms to prevent this kind of manipulation. However, all is not lost as if you follow good practice when designing and promoting your website a good search engine ranking will come naturally.

As always you should beware of false promises – many of which promise to list you first on Google or to generate thousands of links to your website (known as backlinks) overnight. Search engines monitor for abuse of the system and if caught they will lower the ranking or even blacklist your website!

At Bedford Website Design & SEO we help our customers by initially carrying out health checks on their websites then make recommendations to help meet their goals. We can implement changes for you or simply guide and educate. Either way you are guaranteed to increase traffic to your website and gain an edge over your competitors.

Here are some simple steps you can follow to Improve your website's SEO Ranking (Search Engine Optimisation).

  1. Publish Relevant Content

Quality content is the number one driver of your search engine rankings and there is no substitute for great content. Quality content created specifically for your intended user increases site traffic, which improves your site’s authority and relevance.

Identify a keyword phrase for each page. Think about how your reader might search for that specific page (with phrases like “SEO in Bedford” or “best applied website standards”). Then, repeat this phrase several times throughout the page—once or twice in the opening and closing paragraphs, and two to four more times throughout the remaining content.

Don’t forget to use bold, italics, heading tags, and other emphasis tags to highlight keyword phrases, but don’t overdo it.

Never sacrifice good writing for SEO. The best pages are written for the user, not for the search engine.

  1. Update Your Content Regularly

You’ve probably noticed that we feel pretty strongly about content. Search engines do, too. Regularly updated content is viewed as one of the best indicators of a site’s relevancy, so be sure to keep it fresh.

  1. Metadata

Although Metadata no longer helps your website ranking it is displayed in the search results so can be the deciding factor of whether a potential customer chooses to click your website link.

When designing your website, each page contains a space between the <head> tags to insert metadata, or information about the contents of your page. Here are the key types of metadata you should be aware of:

Title Metadata
Title metadata is responsible for the page titles displayed at the top of a browser window. It is the most important metadata on your page.

Description Metadata
Description metadata is the textual description that a browser will use in your page search return. Think of it as your site’s window display—a concise and appealing description of what is contained within, with the goal of encouraging people to enter.

  1. Have a link-worthy site

Focus on creating relevant links within the text. Instead of having “click here” links, try writing out the name of the destination. “Click here” has no search engine value beyond the attached URL, whereas “Business owners guide to SEO” is rich with keywords and will improve your search engine rankings as well as the ranking of the page you are linking to.

  1. Use alt tags

Similar to Metadata always describe your visual and video media using alt tags, or alternative text descriptions. They allow search engines to locate your page, which is crucial.

These are only a few of the many methods for improving your search engine ranking. If after reading this it all sounds too much like hard work Bedford Website Design & SEO can design and manage your campaign to suit any budget.

Finally… beware of quick wins as building your internet presence should be taken as seriously as growing your business or brand and you get out what you put in.
